Getting Ready for Your First Job Interview
By Rebecca | May 13, 2008
Perhaps the most intimidating part of looking for your first job is the interview process. You will meet with your prospective employer and try to convince him or her that you are the person they want to hire. There are several things you can do to prepare for this nerve-wracking encounter.
First, decide what you will wear. You want something dressy but also that you are comfortable wearing. A nice Sunday dress is a good idea. Stockings and nice, simple shoes complete the outfit. Refrain from wearing bright colors or wild patterns. Keep jewelry and accessories simple and conservative.
Second, make sure you show up for the interview ON TIME. In fact, aim for 5 to 10 minutes early. This shows that you can be depended on to be there when you say you will be there.
Be confident and enthusiastic. A saying among managers states, “Hire for attitude. Train for aptitude.” The attitude you present to the interviewer could be just as important, or more important, that the skills listed on your application.
There are certain questions that often show up in interviews. You should be prepared to answer these questions or some like them.
“Tell me about yourself”: This is a common ice-breaker used by interviewers. Rather than nervously reciting your qualifications, try telling an interesting or funny story about your life. This will help the interviewer to remember you and, hopefully, help to put you at ease.
“Why do you want this job?”: Simply saying, “For the money” is not a very good answer to this question. They know that you are trying to earn money. If you mention money, you might mention the part that it plays in your future plans. For instance, if you are saving money for college or a trip abroad. But also think of other reasons why you think you would enjoy the job for which you are interviewing. Possible reasons include experience or enthusiasm for the company.
What is one of your weaknesses: I don’t know a good way to answer this other than to just smile and be honest. Think ahead and try out possible answers on your parents or other adults. They can probably give you some tips on phrasing, etc.
Tell about a time you resolved a problem: Think of a time you were able to smoothly manage a problem and tell how you handled the situation. Any difficult situation qualifies. Think of challenges that you have faced in school, with friends, or babysitting. Practice telling it short and simple.
Why should we hire you for this position: This is a chance to outline your qualifications or experience, if you have any. Again, be honest and don’t try to enhance your experience. Cite your talents and assets, especially your good attitude.
As with anything, practice makes perfect. You can practice beforehand with friends or parents acting the part of the interviewer. However, the best practice is an actual interview. If you don’t get the first job, keep applying and interviewing. Eventually you’ll find the right summer job for you.
