Introducing “Music Makers”

By Rebecca | May 6, 2008

During the past several years I have been involved with a program known in our area as “Music Makers.” Music Makers is a musical workshop for preschool age children. It teaches music appreciation, basic rhythum and timing skills, musical terms, as well as aiding overall development. It also provides a fun environment for mothers and children to interact and play together.

I have recommended the program to many people over the years. Also, many people who have participated in the program here, have expressed a desire to institute the program in other areas when they move. (Since we are a college town, we have lots of families move in and out.) I have been asked many times to explain the Music Makers format and to offer ideas and suggestions for making it successful.

To this end, I have dedicated an entire section of this blog site to Music Makers related information. I recently published a new page titled, “Music Makers.” This page contains a detailed outline of the MM format. There are also links to more detailed advice and ideas for the specific segments. I will add to this section of the site as time and inspiration allow.

The Music Makers program, as well as the individual segments, can be adapted for use in almost any setting where children are being taught music. It can be used with home school groups, in families, in a Nursery class, with a play group, or as an HFPE activity.

In our area, we meet weekly at the church building to sing and have other musical activities. The program has a set format but there is no set curriculum or content. The songs and music have changed over the years as the leaders have changed and new ideas have been incorporated.

Whether you are interested in a whole musical workshop or just some good ideas for entertaining kids, take a look at the Music Makers pages. And feel free to add some of your own ideas as well. Some of the best games and songs I know, I learned from the contributions of others in Music Makers.
