Mom, Do They Need Us?
By Rebecca | April 30, 2008
My daughter surprised me today with her reaction to a message left on our answering machine. First, she asked who the message was from. Then, with wide eyes and a concerned tone, she asked, “Do they need us?”
I had to laugh in spite of her serious face. Over the past few weeks it seems like we have been rushing to help someone or other. There was a family whose Dad was hospitalized with appendicitis. We spent forty-eight hours watching the children and helping as we could. The sick man was also the cub master–which meant there was extra work for all of the Cub Scout leaders trying to put together our Pinewood Derby for this week. (I am the Wolf Den Leader.) Then a good friend hurt her knee and needed a blessing. My brother-in-law and his wife were in town during this time and we needed–and wanted–to find time to spend with them. We adopted an attention-starved, rescued dog with sad eyes and floppy ears. This morning, an acquaintance showed up on my doorstep asking me to watch her daughter for an hour or so.
Apparently, now my three year old has the idea that whenever the phone rings, somebody needs our help. And if they are desperate enough to leave a message, they must really need us!!
It’s times like this that make me think that maybe I’m doing better than I realize. It seems that just by doing my best to help out, my daughter is learning to care about other people and has a desire to help and to serve them. She knows that if someone else is in trouble that we will go and help them.
I am grateful for the opportunities I have to serve. I am grateful for those who have served me in my times of need. I am grateful for the Savior who allows us to become like him, by doing the things that he did–by helping people just as He did when he was on the earth. I am grateful for the chance to teach this principle of happiness to my daughter.
