Choice and Accountibility

By Lei | April 2, 2008

Recently, I was asked to help with the New Beginnings program in our ward. Each of the Laurels were one of the seven values, and I was “Choice and Accountability”. When my friend, (doing this as a project), asked me to be “Choice and Accountability”, I thought, “No big deal!”

I started looking up talks and scriptures on what it means to have the value of choice and accountability. Most of us think, “Oh, it means that we are responsible and have to deal with the consequences of our actions.” Did you, or I till a few months ago, stop to think that it means we are responsible to choose? Part of that responsibility is to be able to choose wisely.

In my little talk that I gave, I told a story that my brother once told to me. He said that he was talking with a woman who began accusing the church of telling you what you could and could not do. She said it was being restrictive. He explained that choosing not to do certain things kept him free and unrestricted. He then turned to her as she began to smoke her cigarette, and asked her if she could choose to quit smoking. He could choose to quit smoking, but could she? The woman “backed off” quickly.

This helped me realise that even though we might feel restricted, it will keep us from making mistakes we really don’t want to make. I am ever grateful that I have followed God’s commandments. I have seen what happens when we don’t.
