Dirt in the Garden
By Rebecca | March 22, 2008
On Tuesday this week my husband and I spent the day as poll workers. When we returned home after working 14 hours straight, my mother-in-law said she needed to speak with us in the backyard.
For some time we have been working on setting up a garden. We had tried various arrangements with friends and neighbors but nothing had worked out. Finally, we decided that we needed to build a garden box in our own back yard. We weren’t sure how to do this but we had faith the Lord would help us.
The first step was to build a “box.” Miraculously, we were able to find tires to arrange into a small garden plot out back. (See “Finding Tires and Seeing the Hand of the Lord” posted on this blog.) The next step was to fill the tires with soil in which we could grow the vegetables. The ground around our home is a red clay and not much good for a garden. Even as we picked up the tires, I prayed in my heard, “Heavenly Father, you have given us the tires to make the garden. Now, please provide the soil. That’s all we need and we can get the seeds planted.”
We knew if we could borrow a truck, we would be able to obtain good soil from a nearby landscaping company. We asked around the ward and found someone who was willing to help us, all we needed to do was match up our schedules so that we could go get the soil. From the first it didn’t look promising. He was busy working his own business and we had a full week with various jobs and activities.
Needless to say, we were quite surprised when we stepped into our backyard Tuesday evening and found the tires filled with top-grade soil. During the day this brother from our ward had picked up the soil, delivered it to our home and filled the tires, leaving the rest in a small pile nearby.
Like Pres. Eyring had said about his father-in-law, this brother “didn’t have to do what he was doing for us. He could have had someone else do it or not have done it at all. But he was serving us… in the way covenant disciples of Jesus Christ always do.”
I am grateful for the gospel of Jesus Christ that allows us to serve one another. I have seen the hand of the Lord helping me to obey the prophet by planting a garden. On Tuesday, the Lord worked through one of his faithful disciples to provide the dirt in the garden.
