Recognizing the Lord’s Fingerprints

By Rebecca | March 20, 2008

Recognizing the hand of the Lord in our lives can sometimes be difficult, especially when our lives are busy with school, seminary, church activities, sports, friends and family. At times, you may feel that “blessings from the Lord” is not a phrase that describes any part of your day. A sister in my institute class shared the following story during a discussion of Pres. Eyring’s talk “O Remember, Remember. (Oct. 2007)”

As a young girl her mother had asked her and her siblings to keep a journal similar to that described by Pres. Eyring. In it she asked them to record instances during the day where they felt blessed by the Lord. After several days the teenage children had nothing to record. They did not feel blessed. They felt their lives were common or ordinary with no special blessings in them at all.

After some thought, the mother asked her teenagers to simply record things in their lives for which they were thankful. This included anything they liked or that made them feel happy. It didn’t have to be “spiritual.” It could be a movie, soccer practice, shoes or a friend.

Grudgingly the teens began writing down things that made them happy. Soon, they started associating good things in their lives with blessings from a loving Heavenly Father. In a short time it was easy for them to list the myriad of ways that they had blessed throughout the day. Gratitude and testimony had grown in their hearts.

For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God.
