Advice to My Little Sister, Going to Her First Dance
By Lei | March 20, 2008
I would like to give advice as an “older sister” about going to church dances.
First—if a guy asks you to dance, say yes! It is traumatic for guys to be told “no”, so just say yes. (Even if he’s a “dork,” he is still just trying to have fun just like everyone else! No need to “pop” his ego bubble!).
If you want to dance with a guy, it is preferable to ask him yourself (or wait for him to ask you), don’t have one of your friends ask him. If he says no, then he is probably an idiot, and doesn’t deserve to dance with you anyway.
Secondly, you do not have to dance all the time at dances! Most dances I go to, I talk with my friends. It is a fun way to “keep up”, and you can talk to all of your friends at once.
Third, you do not have to dance with guys. A lot of the time, there are more girls than there are guys, so it’s OK to dance with your girlfriends. Many friendships have been strengthened by a simple fun dance. (This is also a good way to get those guys to dance who aren’t dancing!)
If you are scared to go, or just don’t want to go because of a bad experience at school, you will never know until you try. I have one friend who will not go to dances because she has had some bad experiences. I am pleased to say that I have never been to a “bad” dance. Also a dance is only as good, or as bad, as you personally make it.
